Why did you choose to specialize in gastroenterology?
The specialty of gastroenterology is an extraordinary field within medicine. I chose to specialize in gastroenterology because it offers a unique opportunity to provide care to patients with a wide spectrum of problems that are of keen interest to me. While many patients share diagnoses in common, it is critically important to carefully listen and evaluate each individual in an effort to work through the diagnostic pathway, while also understanding the parameters that impact each patient as an individual. Gastroenterology also offers unique opportunities to participate in preventative measures that effectively prevent disease while concomitantly promoting longer healthier lives. As an example, screening to prevent colon cancer is now an accepted strategy to reduce and prevent colon cancer in individuals and on a population-wide basis. As a gastroenterologist, I am also able to participate in risk reduction strategies for a variety of patients who have established diagnosis, for which there are modifiable factors, and medications to offset downstream risks and potential complications.
After completing my training in gastroenterology at Weill Cornell Medical Center, I stayed on as a member of a full-time faculty before transitioning to private practice. Throughout my professional career, my focus has always been on patient-centered care for each individual.
