Why did you choose to specialize in gastroenterology?

All patient populations have GI problems and disease. I liked being able to care for a wide variety of people. Adolescents, adults and the elderly; men and women all will eventually need to visit the gastroenterologist. Some problems are acute and single events, others are more chronic or lifelong challenges. To be able to prevent advanced colorectal cancer through early and appropriate screening is effective and most rewarding. The procedural aspect of GI, performing endoscopic procedures for diagnosis and treatment is an important and technically demanding part of our field. My background in engineering was both inspiring and helpful in mastering it. Gastroenterology is an active and fertile field at the research level. Research and advancement in the understanding of disease, resulting in new drugs/therapies and endoscopic advancements has been very exciting to be a part of. The quest to stay current and cutting edge is both demanding and exciting.

What are your areas of special interest and expertise within gastroenterology?

I focus on colorectal cancer screening and prevention, acute and chronic abdominal pain, irritable bowel syndrome, bowel regulation and anorectal pain, hemorrhoid diagnosis and treatment.

What do you and your family enjoy doing during your spare time?

Photography, Travel, Jazz Music, and personal fitness. Cooking and enjoying big family dinners. Playing with my two granddaughters and watching them grow. Getting really dirty tinkering under the hood of my car trying to fix today what I likely broke yesterday.
